How do I prepare 0.5% nitric acid solution from 69% nitric acid?
Requirements for preparing 0.5% nitric acid solution from 69% nitric acid?
Here we need 69% of nitric acid and distilled water.
To prepare 0.5% nitric acid solution we want specific amount of concentrated nitric acid to the container and mix distilled water to it.
For preparing a 0.5 % nitric acid solution, we want to add 5 ml of 69% HNO3 to 1 litre of distilled water. So, our solution of 0.5% nitric acid is prepared.
Steps for prepare 0.5% nitric acid solution from 69% nitric acid are given below:
1. Calculate the amount of 69% HNO3 we want to make your specific volume of 0.5% nitric acid. Suppose, if we want to prepare 1 liter of 0.5% nitric acid solution. We need 5 ml of 69% nitric acid.
2. Mix calculated amount of 69% nitric acid to dry container.
3. Now, add slowly distilled water to the container and stir it continuously. Mix enough water to prepare a 1 litre total volume.
4. When nitric acid is totally dissolved then stop stirring. That means continue stirring until the HNO3 is completely dissolved.
5. Using pH paper or pH meter test the pH of the solution. Adjust the pH if there is need of nitric acid or distilled water until the desired pH is achieved.
Notes:
Here, remember one thing that- it is necessary to add the nitric acid to the water slowly and carefully. Don't add water to the acid.
Use safety apparatus like gloves, goggles etc. to protect ourself from the toxic chemicals (i.e. nitric acid in this case).
