How to study Organic Chemistry?

One question is always arises us about Organic Chemistry i.e How to study Organic Chemistry effectively? Tips to study Organic Chemistry. So, lets go-

Chemistry is the subject which required devotion of time continuously in parts. It is not a subject that can be done in one go. It needed more revision multiple times. Organic chemistry is really a wonderful type of chemistry. All says that chemistry is all about rote memorization but they are wrong. As far as I know and read chemistry it is a subject to be read with patience gradually. Suitable practice of the concepts one by one creats it more understandable and interesting.

Review the following material from general chemistry:

General Chemistry

Lewis structures and all types of bonding concepts, containing the octet rule and the user of VSEPR to predict shapes. Other bonding concepts are less important compared to this bonding type but it useful to review them, too.

It really useful to know about the concept of “spectator ions.”  I see students each and every year who think they required to concluded the sodium from sodium hydroxide in a reaction mechanism…
It also helps to know the most common atomic ion charges, and the common inorganic anions. For example, you should know that oxide is -2 and fluoride is -1.

Bronsted-Lowry acid-base chemistry, particularly the concepts of “conjugate acid” and “conjugate base.” Lewis acid-base concepts are also important, but not as much. They appear all the time, but they’re not called “acid-base” reactions.

Arrhenius acid-base concepts are essentially useless in organic chemistry, unless you understand the deep reasoning behind them.

Electrons with negative charge, and nuclei with positive charge. Electrons are attracted to nuclei; they repel other electrons. Nuclei are attracted to electrons; they repel other nuclei. In simple words, Opposite  charges attract ; like charges repel. Thus, you never have electrons moving away from a center of positive charge - one of the most common student mistakes.

Basic information on chemical reaction energies. Rate law material is useful, but not necessary until you get to more advanced courses. The concept of bond energies is quite important, and understanding that reactions happen because you are breaking up a weaker set of bonds in order to form a stronger set.

Second, get over the idea that organic chemistry is impossibly hard. It’s only so if you are lazy.

The more practice you do firstly to understand the concepts, the easier it should get later on, and I have had different students tell me that this has been their experience.

Everything build on everything else. I often caution my students in the initial going that if they don’t understand or memorize  certain early concepts, those concepts will come back and bite them painfully in the ass. And typically, they do, because students don’t see why they should listen when I tell them this. Organic Chemistry is one of the most scoring subject if we can understand it well, we can simply and easily score it.

For NEET/JEE organic chemistry we can rely on NCERT (as nowadays NTA sets complete paper based on NCERT only) and our own coaching notes plus other material.

Reference Books:

NCERT(Many Questions directly being asked from NCERT textbook)- Good for both JEE/NEET.

MS Chauhan(Must Practice questions for JEE preparation).

Morrison & Boyd Organic Chemistry(best for JEE refer this book once you done with 1st level books and want to practice more).

OP Tandon(Good Explanation of topics)-Good for both JEE/NEET.

Few important suggestions to study organic chemistry

1. Focus the understanding, not memorization-

Nomenclature of organic compound

The basic information of organic chemistry is that- if we can understand it well, only then we can score good. Without understanding, it is impossible to memorize organic chemistry. There are; however, certain aspects of the course that needed memorization - such as Nomenclature terms, Reagent names and Acronyms, Functional groups, and so on...

2.Practice reactions on daily basis.

Practice reactions on daily basis

It is a question to lot of students; how do I memorize the reactions? Certainly, it is required to be memorized the reactions. The better way to learn organic chemistry reactions is to understand. Understanding the reactions is the good input for practicing and constant practice the reactions is the best output for result. If you practice constantly, then you will get the intuition for the result of the reaction. Equally Organic Chemistry is such a subject that depends on practicing. Only practice make perfect.

Make a separate organic notebook and try to write minimum 5–6 organic mechanism and reactions on daily basis.

3.Understand the mechanism of reaction

Understanding mechanism of reaction

It is the question of more of students that - how to understand organic chemistry simply. Reactions are the important part of Organic Chemistry. Try to write an explanation of reaction to your own words and supervise it. This the best way to understand the mechanism of organic Chemistry. Some reactions follow the same mechanism. Understand the classifications of the each reaction and it gives more easily for our understanding. It’s good to analyze and evaluate the chemical reaction.

4.Take mock test regularly

Mock test regularly

Taking mock test will help you to understand to evaluate our weak and strong points as well practicing mock test continuously will increase our time management skill and accuracy.

After each and every test do proper analysis and observation. Note Down your mistakes. Try to Revise and solve them again after every 15–20 days such that you won’t repeat same mistake again in actual NEET/JEE exam.

So, this are the short information about- How to do study Organic Chemistry effectively? And tips for studying organic chemistry.
