Depression linked to white blood cell count, study finds

Let us consider about the latest study by Vanderbilt University, researchers discovered that rising depression polygenic scores are related to increased white blood cell count, spotted the application of the immune system in depression. Including a wide understanding of depression as a psychiatric disorder, depression’s underlying biological effects are still wildly realized.

Relation between depression and genetic risk-

In the research, the group are tested between two groups people who had depression and people who did not, but were at high genetic risk for developing depression. They searched a powerful relation between depression polygenic scores and white blood cell count. They also discovered that even having a more enetic risk for depression was enough to arrived to an elevated step of white blood cells.

The researchers’ results proved a response loop in which people who are at a higher genetic risk for depression also have a greater baseline step of inflammation. If a person develops depression, that further rises the biomarkers related to inflammation.

The researchers group says the relation between depression polygenic scores and white blood cell count was very powerful. People with higher polygenic scores for depression had a higher white blood cell count, but the number was still considered in the 'usual’ range. This proposed that sustained, but not unusual or abnormal, activation of the immune system can be contributing to depression.

These discovery also mentioned that the joining between depression polygenic scores and increased white blood cell count are bidirectional. The study exhibit an exciting opportunity to think about a new class of anti-depressive therapies focused on lowering pro-inflammatory markers.
