How can you prepare a 10% Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution?

10% NaOH

In this article, we will discuss about the -  How can you prepare a 10% Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution

What is NAOH?

NaOH is called as Sodium hydroxide that is highly reactive substance. If it is not handle properly the it may causes burns or irritation to the skin and eyes. It was harmful for health if not handle properly.

To prepare a 10% NaOH we want following chemicals:

• NaOH pallets.

• Distilled water.

• beaker or flask.

Determine the amount of NaOH needed:

If I  weigh 1g of NaOH and make up the volume up to 100 ml will be 1% solution. But We want 10 % NaOH solution. 1 g in 100 ml carbon Dioxide free water is equal to 1 % solution, so 10 g in 100 ml carbon Dioxide free water will be 10 % solution

Steps for preparing 10% Sodium hydroxide solution:

1) Measure 10 g of NaOH using balance in laboratory.

2) Add this sodium hydroxide to 90 ml of distilled water in a flask.

3) Stir the mixture : when NaOH dissolved completely then stop stirring.

4) Now, we want total volume 100 ml. So, add more distilled water until the volume of the solution is 100 ml.

5) Stir the solution very well.

And we get the 10% sodium hydroxide solution.

Precautions that should be taken during Preparing NaOH solution:

•  NaOH is base so keep it away from acids. Otherwise there will be violent reaction.

• If sodium hydroxide comes in Contact with eyes then fastly wash the eyes with water for about 15 minutes. If necessary, visit to the doctor.

• Always add NaOH to water prevent splashing and boiling.

• Wear gloves, goggles, and apron during preparing solution.
